Baileys blinds are often asked to supply and install wooden venetian blinds in bay windows. This is easy to do but there are things to consider before proceeding.

Wooden venetian blinds installed in square bay window

Baileys blinds normally find that the wooden venetian blinds have to be fitted into plasterboard. We fix other types of blinds into plasterboard using specialist fixings but we have found that due to their weight it is possible to pull wooden venetian blinds out of a plasterboard ceiling when the blind is raised and lowered. Baileys blinds only fix wooden venetian blinds into plasterboard ceilings when the customers agree to lift the blind slats as well as using the lift cords.

Corner veiw of wooden venetian blind in square bay

Sometimes it is not possible to eliminate gaps between venetian blinds where they meet in the corners. This is not usually a problem because the window mullions and supports cover the gaps. And all venetian blinds need to be dusted.www.baileysblinds.com.

Baileys Blinds have recently installed a venetian blind with 25mm wide slats on a bay window with three panels covered with curtains. The middle window has full sun during the day and the customers wanted shading from direct sunlight without closing the curtains. We could not fit blinds to the side windows but the side curtains could be closed while the venetian blind provided shading and allows light through the middle window.

Venetian blind in bay with side curtains open

The front window is a fixed pane and two side opening side windows make up the three window bay. There are protruding window handles on the two side windows which would interfere with the venetian blinds and prevent them from hanging properly. There was just enough room to allow a venetian blind to hang properly on the larger window because it has no protruding handles.

Venetian blind in bay window with curtains open

Venetian blinds with 25mm wide slats are raised and lowered with a cord and are rotated using a stick or wand. Venetian blinds look very neat and modern and allow for very easy and effective light control. Although they need to be dusted regularly Baileys Blinds find that venetian blinds still remain a popular choice for window shading.www.baileysblinds.com.

Baileys Blinds from Bury St Edmunds and Brandon, Suffolk, have just installed vertical blinds and 25mm venetian blinds in nine flats in Ipswich, Suffolk, built for M&D developments.

Vertical blinds were fitted in most of the rooms. They were made using Guardian fabric from Louvolite which is flame retardant and washable. Flame retardant fabrics are normally used in public buildings.

The french doors in the building open inwards. Baileys blinds installed 25 mm venetian blinds fitted into the glazing bars inside the doors. The venetian blind slats are tilted using an acetate wand and lifted and lowered with cords. The 25mm venetian blinds are narrow enough to allow the doors to be opened fully without damaging the venetian blinds.

The flats were to be completed on 26 September 2009 and Baileys Blinds completed the installation of the blinds on time as agreed.

We usually tell our customers to measure the width of the window opening at the top of the recess. When the window blind is manufactured we will make the necessary allowances to ensure that the blind fits correctly.

Venetian blind measured between half tiled recess

Venetian blind allowing for tiles at bottom of recess

This advice is correct when measuring vertical or roller blinds because the fabric is not quite as wide as the recess. However venetian blinds are as wide at the top as they are at the bottom. Therefore an allowance has to be made to provide clearance for the tiles if the recess is partially tiled at the bottom.

You must measure venetian blinds at the bottom when the recess is partially tiled.

When measuring partially tiled recesses, measure tightly between the tiles and take off 15mm. If you don’t, the blind will clash with the tiles when the blind is lowered.

French doors open out onto a patio area in the garden and she wanted something to provide shading on the windows without closing the curtains.

She doesn’t like vertical blinds and also felt that a large roller blind would be unsightly and impractical. I suggested wood effect 25 mm width aluminium venetian blinds mounted in Perfect Fit frames. This makes the venetian blinds appear to be part of the window.

We installed the blinds two weeks after receiving her order and she was very pleased saying that the blinds looked like shutters. They tilt and lift the same as venetian blinds do in conventional installations. If you need to know more come and see in our showrooms in Bury St Edmunds or Brandon or visit www.baileysblinds.com

Some years ago I fitted some golden coloured venetian blinds for a young Indian couple who run a food wholesale business in Bury St Edmunds.

The customer was busy so his father let me into the house to install the venetian blinds. The father spoke perfect English and he said that he had driven lorries in India and said that his English had been of great help to him in India.

After travelling for several hours it was impossible to speak with the locals because their language would be completely different. If he was lost the only way to get directions was to find the police station. It is usually the only place in town to find somebody who will speak the same language, namely English.
