Nothing to do with window blinds or origami but quite clever anyway.

How to measure window blinds inside a recess

Measure window blind width at the top of the recess

Measure window blind width at the top of the recess

The greatest worry when you  purchase a window blind is whether the blind will fit when it is made. Most window blinds are fitted inside the window recess.

You should always use a steel tape measure. Cloth tape measures can stretch  and give an inaccurate measurement.

We measure the window width inside the window recess at the top.
The drop is measured in at least two positions and we use the shorter of the measurements. All of the dimensions are given to the nearest millimetre.

For vertical blinds top fix brackets are normally used when fitting inside a window recess.

We use the recess sizes and any clearances required to allow the blind to fit the recess are made during the window blind manufacturing process.

How to measure venetian blinds with tiles

September 6th, 2009

We usually tell our customers to measure the width of the window opening at the top of the  recess. When the window blind is manufactured we will make the necessary allowances to ensure that the blind fits correctly.

This advice is correct when measuring vertical or roller blinds because the fabric is not quite as wide as the recess. However venetian blinds are as wide at the top as they are at the bottom. Therefore an allowance has to be made to provide clearance for the tiles if the recess is partially tiled at the bottom.

You must measure venetian blinds at the bottom when the recess is partially tiled.

When measuring partially tiled recesses, measure tightly between the tiles and take off 15mm.  If you don’t, the blind will clash with the tiles when the blind is lowered.

Gremlins

September 4th, 2009

Image042.A papillon dog breeder in Bury St Edmunds needed some replacement slats for her vertical blinds in her conservatory. When I visited her house the papillons started making a terrible noise so she left me in the conservatory and went into the house to calm the dogs. After I had finished she ordered the new vertical blind slats and we agreed a date to fit the blinds.
The dogs started to bark again so I asked to see them. She led me to the the kitchen where the sight of so many small dogs reminded me of the film Gremlins.

How to fit vertical blinds in conservatories

Most of the time we have use right angled extendable face fix brackets to fit vertical blinds in conservatories.

The brackets have to be long enough to allow the vertical blind slats to be clear of the window handles when they are fully open. The vertical blind bracket is screwed into a nylon gromet which allows the blind positioned closer to or further from the window as required. This feature is useful when we need to run vertical blinds into the corners in conservatories.DSCF0696

Sloping Vertical Blinds in The Arc

September 3rd, 2009

Image030The flats above the Arc in Bury St Edmunds are now being snapped up by ‘buy to let’ landlords. Baileys blinds have installed vertical and velux blinds in several of the new flats. The top floor flats have a kitchen, dining and lounge area with one bedroom. The windows need dressing because they look directly into the flat opposite.
There are two sloping windows in the main living area. Baileys Blinds have already installed sloping vertical blinds in some of these flats. The sloping blinds rotate but the slats do not traverse across the window. It is possible to make sloping vertical blinds that traverse windows but we have found that when they are roughly handled the links which connect the slats break and the slats collapse to the bottom of the tracks. We therefore lock the blind slats in position which allows them to rotate but not traverse. Some landlords do not like this but Baileys Blinds have found this to be the most practical solution.

The image shows  the sloping vertical blind in Guardian beige fabric with 89mm slats rotated into the closed position. You can see the flat opposite through the open sliding balcony door. You can contact Baileys Blinds in Bury St Edmunds and Brandon through www.baileysblinds.com

Fed up with vertical blind colour? Change the slats!

July 25th, 2009

055We see many people in our blind showrooms in Bury St Edmunds and Brandon who want change the colour of their vertical blind slats. They move into a new house with existing vertical blinds or redecorate or just get fed up with the colours and want a change. Its very easy and relatively cheap to do assuming that the vertical blind track mechanism is still working because you are only paying to change the fabric.

We prefer for you to provide us with a sample slat as a pattern for the dimensions and to make sure that slat hangers on the new vertical blind slats will be compatible with your track mechanism.

Kittens

June 16th, 2009

Visited a cat breeder in a village east of Bury St Edmunds to show her the roller blind colours in our catalogue for her conservatory. She wanted to change her vertical blinds for roller blinds because the cats enjoyed playing with the vertical blind weights and chains and had ruined them.

She kindly brought two newborn kittens from their mother to show me. They were inquisitive and very  cute but I wasn’t allowed to touch them in case their mother rejected them.

We have an on line roller  blind catalogue on our website www.baileysblinds.com (we dont sell cats but we know someone who does).

Perfect Fit Venetian Blinds

June 16th, 2009

063Becky needed something to dim out her ground floor bedroom because she had difficulty sleeping after her night shifts. French doors open out onto a patio area in the garden and she wanted something to provide shading on the windows without closing the curtains.

She doesn’t like vertical blinds and also felt that a large roller blind would be unsightly and impractical. I suggested wood effect 25 mm width aluminium venetian blinds mounted in Perfect Fit frames. This makes the venetian blinds appear to be part of the window.

We installed the blinds two weeks after receiving her order and she was very pleased saying that the blinds looked like shutters. They tilt and lift the same as venetian blinds do in conventional installations. If you need to know more come and see in our showrooms in Bury St Edmunds or Brandon or visit www.baileysblinds.com

English rules OK (I’m afraid)

Venetian blinds in Sebert Wood Primary School

Some years ago I fitted some golden coloured venetian blinds for a young Indian couple who run a food wholesale business in Bury St Edmunds.

The customer was busy so his father let me into the house to install the venetian blinds. The father spoke perfect English and he said that he had driven lorries in India and said that his English had been of great help to him in India.

After travelling for several hours it was impossible to speak with the locals because their language would be completely different. If he was lost the only way to get directions was to find the police station. It is usually the only place in town to find somebody who will speak the same language, namely English.
